The Coaching Myth
Every year, lakhs of aspirants spend ₹2–5 lakhs on Delhi coaching institutes — and most still fail. The truth is, UPSC rank does not correlate with coaching fees paid. Many toppers, including officers from small towns, cleared it through disciplined self-study.
What You Actually Need
- Standard Books: Laxmikant, Spectrum, Bipin Chandra, NCERT 6–12
- Daily Newspaper: The Hindu or Indian Express — 1 hour minimum
- Answer Writing: Daily practice, no matter what
- Revision System: Without revision, everything is forgotten
- Accountability: Study alone and you will quit. Study in community and you will persist.

A 12-Month Study Blueprint
Phase 1 (Months 1–3): Foundation
Complete all NCERTs — 6th to 12th for History, Geography, Economics, Science, and Polity. Do not skip this. NCERT is the backbone of your UPSC preparation.
Phase 2 (Months 4–7): Standard Books
Laxmikant for Polity, Spectrum for Modern History, Majid Husain or GC Leong for Geography. One book at a time. Complete it. Revise it.
Phase 3 (Months 8–12): Current Affairs + Answer Writing
Newspaper daily. Vision IAS or Insights monthly current affairs. Start answer writing from Day 1 of this phase — aim for 2 answers per day minimum.
